I wish that I could write to say that spring is here and the snow is gone but, sadly, this is not the case at the moment. Earlier this week, I encountered a temperature of -10 degrees F on my way in to work and so winter is lingering a little longer than we would like. That being said, the long-term forecast looks somewhat promising with highs in the 40’s and within the next few weeks, with a little luck, we may be able to get a good feel of how the golf course fared over the winter season under the snow. The next newsletter should be a little more enlightening in regards to current course conditions. This might be a good time to write about something that we would like to perform as a service to our patrons.
As many of you know, the Wilderness makes extensive use of ornamental grasses around the entire facility. These perennial ornamentals (they come back every year) are particularly noticeable around tee signs and they make a very nice enhancement to any landscape planting. Getting these plants to become established and thrive has taken years of planning and care and I am proud to say that in many cases these plants are overgrowing their environments and need to be split and removed. The plants that are removed-called “field clumps”-can then be transplanted to other places. We have been doing this on the golf course and resort for years. It has been well over 10 years since we have purchased any grasses from a nursery with only a few small exceptions.
We thought that it might be a nice gesture to our customers to offer some of these field clumps for free as a sign of our appreciation for your business. They might make a nice reminder of a memorable experience you may have had while playing here. Care for these plants after establishment is incredibly easy and just to be sure we will provide, if requested, a set of written instructions of how to care for the plants.
